Mentors: What are some of the benefits of being involved in professional organizations? Tell us about the most interesting thing you’ve learned or experience you’ve had at a conference or other organization meeting.

Mentees: Pretend you’re the president or leader of a professional organization. What initiatives would you take to improve the profession of Library and Information Science?

  1. Before I left academic librarianship to work in IT, I was involved in a subsection of ACRL (Women’s Studies Section). It was great — I went to both ALA conferences every year, saw library school friends, did useful work and developed connections with colleagues at other libraries that I still maintain today. It’s important to get out of your daily work and meet people in other libraries. Librarians are so incredibly helpful and collaborative! This is one of the best features of our profession — take advantage of it. You should become a student member of at least one library organization and attend at least one local, regional and national conference during library school if at all possible.
